August 2016 Monthly Goals

Confession time: I completely forgot about one of my July goals after I wrote my goals out.  100% completely forgot about it.  Not because I wanted to, but there were more important things on my mind.  July was an incredibly busy month.  Between spending the first week of the month at my parents’ house in Illinois, followed by working the other three weeks of the month part time on a curriculum project, I had to prioritize my time and some things just had to go to the wayside.  A year ago, heck even six months ago, I had a much more difficult time doing this.  But I’ve slowly been coming to the realization that I’m not superwoman and therefore cannot do everything that I have my eyes set on accomplishing.

In addition to not being superwoman, spending time with this cutie is one of my top priorities right now

July was also an incredibly hot month here in the DC area.  I lost track of how many days in a row that the temperature hit the 90s or 100s, making it extremely difficult to consistently get little man outside during the day or in the evening for a walk in his stroller.  Nobody can control the weather, so all I could do was do my best to meet my July goals.

july 2016 goals

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical at least 70 miles.

Grade: A++

This is the one July goal that I not only met, but crushed.  My July mileage total was a whopping 81.8 miles, 48 miles of which I ran.  I hope I can be just as successful in August.

2.  Strength train at least three times per week.

Grade: C

This has been a goal that I’ve tried to meet for three months now, and can’t seem to reach.  I must be better about this, even if its only strength training for 15 or so minutes in the evening.

3.  Take little man for at least three walks per week.

Grade: B

Given the unbearable heat, I did the best that I could with this goal.  There was only one week that I met this goal (the first week of the month when we were visiting my parents in Illinois).  Part of what allowed me to meet my goal that week was the cooler weather, but also there were several mornings or afternoons when I didn’t have access to a car, and therefore our only way to get out of the house was to go for a walk.

4.  Keep my house clean.

Goal: B

Despite completely forgetting about this goal, Preston and I did fairly well with keeping up with the housework, but there’s always room for improvement.  Was our house clean the entire month?  Of course not.  But was it better than it has been in recent months?  Absolutely.

August is going to be yet another busy month for me.  It’ll include a week away on vacation at Disney World (we’re now in the single digits countdown!).  Once we return from Disney, I’ll have a week of part time work with several meetings at school before I head back to work full time during the last week of the month.  I’m going to do my best to cut myself a bit of a break this month, but I also want to make sure that I stay focused and keep up with my half marathon training.

aug 2016 goals

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical at least 85 miles.

Since I logged 81.8 miles in July its only natural that I up the ante this month.

2.  Strength train at least three times per week.

It needs to happen.  End of story.

3.  Keep up with training while on vacation.

This goal might be even harder to reach than my strength training goal.  Whenever we go on vacation, I always make a point to bring workout clothes, but most of the time don’t workout as much as I intend to.  The one vacation that I’ve successfully done so was last August while in Florida on our babymoon.  Once we return from Disney, three will be exactly four weeks until Rock ‘n’ Roll Philly, making it imperative that I keep up with my training while we’re away.  I do plan to cut back on my training mileage while we’re in Florida, but I still need to make sure that I’m getting my runs in.

QOTD: What are your goals for August?

I’m linking up with Ange and Carmyy for the Monthly Goals linkup.  Be sure to check out their posts as well.

  1. Oh, if you could see my house…it’s shameful. With this new puppy, it’s impossible to stay on top of things. Yes, it bothers me, but I’d rather be doing other things!

  2. I was over going to gym, so I picked up a couple of dumbbell sets for home. Between those, my elliptical, and some resistance bands, I found I LOVE working out in my garage almost every day now! Calypso keeps me company, and I save a lot of time trying to psych myself up to drive to the gym. Plus I’m kind of outside, which was my ultimate goal in the first place. It may be blazing hot, but with my fan turned on, it’s all good. Maybe pick up a couple of dumbbell sets and you can squeeze in some reps while little man is snoozing.

  3. Sadly my goals for august aren’t really centered around working out or running. I am going to be running around like crazy trying to complete house work and lots of other things I wanted to do all summer long..lol. Want to get this stuff before school starts so I can start refreshed! Have a great time at Disney!

  4. Boy, I get that life interferes with our best plans! Nice job getting MOST of it done. Really all we can ask for, right?

  5. Lesley says:

My strength training definitely improved when I was doing them at home. I started hating how difficult it was to get around my gym because of ALL the construction projects around it. I was tired of that and the traffic, and it became a chore.

I love your monthly goals… I need to do this, will start now!

  7. Chaitali says:

Very impressive that you kept up with the housework even while forgetting about the goal 🙂 Great job on the goals and yay for a single digit vacation countdown!

  8. It’s so hard in the summer with little ones! This is the first year I really realized it bc EK just wants to run around and it sucks when its 91 by 8:00 in the morning. I’m ready for fall!

  9. Realizing that you are not superwoman is hard but one of the best things you can do as a mom. We just can’t always do everything we would like to do. Gotta just do your best! Running lately has been so hard here with this humidity!

  10. carmyy says:

eek! I’m actually supposed to be cleaning right now instead of reading blogs! I know I failed at my cleaning goal already!

  11. House cleaning is definitely not a priority for me (ask any of my kids or husband). That said, I remember reading something years ago that said …”your kids will not remember a clean house, but will remember the time you spent with them.” I took that to heart, and well…the rest is all history LOL My house isn’t dirty, but just has so much clutter…..it always looks more messy than it actually is. Denial? (maybe) 😉

  12. Family first I say! You have a cute little cuddle bunny there and goals are meant to be a guide and should always be fluid. Just enjoy the time off you’ve got now!

  13. MB Jackson says:

Family first! I clean little things here and there so it is never done all at one time. Enjoy Disney World- it is hotter than snot here right now! 🙂

  14. I love how you keep track of your monthly goals. I haven’t really thought about my goals for August. A big personal goal of mine is to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight in the next 30 days. So I’ll go with that!

  15. strength training is one of those that had gotten away from me too and I could tell in my muscle strength. It’s a goal for me right now too, but as you mentioned, I am also realizing I can’t do it all! I am mom and wife first! 🙂

  16. Karen :0) says:

You had a great month! I’m glad you were able to enjoy the summer, also! Your little guy is just too cute! Have a great weekend!
