How is it that we’re already halfway through 2016? This year is just flying by. It feels like just yesterday that little man was born and that we were closing out 2015.
After running ZOOMA Annapolis at the beginning of June, I almost feel like my fitness fell apart a bit. As I’ve shared in my past couple weekly recaps, this past month went far from how I would have liked. Between end of the school year craziness, both little man and I getting sick, and then hurting my back, I wasn’t able to be as active in June as I had wanted to. Despite those obstacles, I’m quite pleased with what I was able to accomplish over the past two weeks, but it was a little too late in terms of still being able to meet my June goals, especially my mileage goal.
1. Run, walk, and elliptical at least 70 miles.
Grade: C+
My final total for the month was 54.7 miles. I made it 78% of the way to my mileage goal. Given my lack of activity for almost half of the month, I’m quite pleased that I was able to log as many miles as I did.
2. Strength train at least three times a week.
Grade: C
Not one week did I strength train three times. Most weeks I did twice, and other weeks I was only able to once.
3. Cross train at least twice a week.
Grade: B
My cross training was a combination of time spent on the elliptical and taking little man for walks in his stroller. I hope to continue this combination throughout the summer.
4. Run at least once a week.
Grade: A
Even though I spent my three weeks out of training mode focused on cross training and not on running, I did keep up with my goal of running at least once a week, which made it easier on myself when I transitioned back into training mode this past week.
After not having June go the way that I wanted it to, I’m quite motivated to have a productive and successful July. While I’m trying to make the most of my time with little man, I also want to make sure that I’m taking time for myself and still making my fitness and well being a priority. It’ll be an interesting month, as tomorrow little man and I leave to spend a week at my parents’ house in Illinois. Although we’ll be away from home, I’m hopeful that with my parents’ help that I’ll still be able to get my planned runs in and get to the gym once or twice for some weight training. Once we return home, even though I’ll be working part time on a curriculum project for school, I still want to make sure that I make my fitness and self care a priority throughout the month.
1. Run, walk, and elliptical at least 70 miles.
I’m hopeful that as the distance of my long training runs slowly increases this month that I’ll be able to meet the mileage goal that I set for myself last month but was unable to reach.
2. Strength train at least three times per week.
Even if its only fitting in a short at home strength training session, I really want to try to meet this goal this month. Thankfully there are lots of great strength training exercises that I can do at home, both with and without using little man as my “weight.”
3. Take little man on at least three walks per week.
The fresh air is great for both of us, and most weeks since he was born we’ve been able to go on at least one or two walks per week. This month I want to challenge myself to up that to three walks.

Little man and I out on a walk earlier this week
4. Keep my house clean.
Okay, this might sound like an odd goal, but let me explain. One of the biggest challenges that Preston and I have faced since little man was born is keeping our house clean. I know that this is a challenge that many new parents face, but the lack of a clean house started causing a lot of anxiety for me. Thanks to an amazing Angie’s List deal, we had two out of three floors of our townhouse professionally cleaned earlier this week, and when the two maids left the house I felt a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders. Now that the house has had a deep cleaning, I really want to do what I can to keep the house this way. This will be a huge challenge, but one that I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to accomplish.
QOTD: What are your goals for July?
I’m linking up with Ange and Carmyy for the Monthly Goals linkup. Be sure to check out their posts as well.
I haven’t been as great about my homework as I should be–Becky gives me stuff to do at home to supplement what we do at our weekly sessions. I need to get at it!
Your little guy looks so cute with his shades!
Thanks Wendy! They stayed on his face for only a couple more moments after we took our picture and then they became a chew toy.
Those look like good goals, achievable without being overwhelming. I need to look into that professional house cleaning! With all my dogs, I can never keep up.
It feels like the cleaning is never ending, doesn’t it?
He’s adorable wearing those sunglasses! These sound like great goals and good luck with July. I also can’t believe we’re already halfway through the year.
Thanks Lesley. Here’s to a great month for both of us!
You had a few rough weeks in there, I remember, so I think you did great considering. My goals this month are to start marathon training and lose the bit of weight I gained in the off season.
Thanks Nicole. I’ve tried to not be too hard on myself given how rough the middle of the month was.
I think trying to keep a clean house is a struggle for all of us! I don’t have a child but I have a Labrador who will get out every toy she own, and also ruffle up all the pillows on the sofa. Oh and don’t get me started on all the dog hair. But ya know what, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Have a great and safe trips to see Illinois. I’m sure having your parents around to help with little man will be a great help to you!
Our dog babies are worth every single hair that they leave around the house.
I think you are a little hard on your grading! You had some great PR’s last month so cut yourself a little slack. Hope you have a great weekend
We’re all our worst critic, aren’t we?
You’ve got some great goals for the month! Walking more with your son sounds great. I need to step up my strength training, hopefully July will finally be the month!
Here’s to a great month for both of us.
Tough grading scale- LOL! I like how you have your goals already set. Getting outside with your son and keeping the house clean are big ones! I am sure you will earn an A!
Oh I hope so!
Thanks for linking up! My cross training wasn’t too on point either… oops!
Hopefully July will be a better month for all of us.
I suck at keeping the house clean. I’d try to do something then the dust would kick off my allergies. It’s supposed to be my husband’s job now…
Its a difficult task to keep up with.
I can’t remember if you routinely do your strength training at home or go to a gym…(?). I have a hard time scheduling in a “session” (and I don’t have a membership anywhere), so I keep a set of hand weights (12 lbs) in my bedroom and occasionally do a 10-15 minutes of arm work before going to bed. Granted, a 30-45 minutes session would be ideal, but 10-15 minutes is better than nothing…and it’s enough to maintain my strength and keep me toned 😉
I do a combination of at home and gym exercises. I feel like I get a better workout at the gym, but I definitely don’t have enough time to get there as frequently as I’d like to. And like you said, anything is better than nothing.
My last few weeks have been less than stellar too, here’s to a new month. Good luck with your goals.
Here’s to a better month for both of us.

My June was also not as awesome as May, but sometimes life happens and I do my best to roll with it. HEre’s hoping to a good July!
Here’s to a better July for both of us.
