My mileage really started to ramp up during this past week of training. It helps that we had a preview of spring last week too, and that the days are starting to get longer, which has not only helped me to be able to get outside for more walks during the day with little man but also allowed me to be able to run outside one evening after Preston got home from work. The forecast for this coming week looks exceptionally nice (predicted highs are in the 60s and 70s each day!), so I’m crossing my fingers that it stays that way so that I can get outside as much as I can.
I experienced a first during Saturday’s long run – I encountered four deer on the trail. The four deer were just walking along the paved path on the trail, and from a distance I couldn’t tell at first if they were large dogs or deer. As I slowly got closer, I started to wonder if I was going to have to turn around, but then about a minute after I started asking myself that the deer left the trail and ran into the nearby woods. It was quite an interesting encounter, and the first time that I’ve come across deer on this trail since we moved out here just over a year and a half ago. I wonder if I’ll ever encounter deer on that trail again.
Then, Saturday night after my run I did something pretty silly at home. I wasn’t paying attention and ran into the leg of the couch with my foot. And it wasn’t a soft encounter – it was hard enough that I was initially worried that I’d broken three of the toes on my right foot (the three smallest). I banged up my already bad foot, which has been causing me some pain on and off since I slipped on ice a couple of weeks ago. As of this morning the pain in my toes is less than it has been for the past 36 hours, so I’m hopeful with some more rest and taking it easy during the first part of this week that my mishap won’t affect my running too much this week. I’m due to increase my mileage for my long run again next Saturday, and I really don’t want to have my lack of paying attention cause me to go off track with my training.
Even if my foot causes me to not have the productive week that I’m hoping for, I can at least look back on this past week and know that it was a successful week.
