The Benefits of A Fiber-Enriched Diet (and a SmartyPants Giveaway!)

Among the many nutrients that are necessary for a well-balanced diet is fiber.  Like other nutrients that are important for a living a healthy lifestyle, many Americans struggle to consume the recommended daily amounts of fiber.  According to the Institute of Medicine, its recommended that adults consume the following amounts of fiber each day:

Adults 50 Years and Younger:

Men – 38 grams
Women – 25 grams

Adults Over 50 Years of Age:

Men – 30 grams
Women – 21 grams

So why should you consume the recommended amount of fiber each day?  There’s a number of benefits of fiber.

The Benefits of A Fiber-Enriched Diet

  • It helps regulate the body’s breakdown of sugar
  • It helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer
  • It helps to keep the body’s blood sugar in check
  • It helps to normalize bowel movements (you don’t want them to be too stiff or too loose)
  • It helps to lower cholesterol levels
  • It assists in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight

Some of my favorite fiber-enriched foods include strawberries, bananas, brown rice, broccoli, and potatoes.  You can check out the Mayo Clinic’s list of high fiber foods here.

    I love large medjool dates as they perfectly sweet and loaded with fiber!

  2. I need to do so much better with the fiber. Do these make you gassy? That’s the problem I find with fiber supplements and enriched foods. I need to try this. I usually have thick smoothies and apples to get my fiber. Thanks for sharing.

    I eat a lot of oatmeal and whole grain bread.

  7. As a vegetarian I get lots of fiber in my diet probably the most comes from beans and fruits like apples and pears. Good info!

  8. I eat a ton of vegetables every day, so I get a ton of fiber that way. I’m awful about remembering to take any sort of pill or vitamin.

    I’m shocked that the fiber requirements decrease as people get older. Maybe due to expected overall calorie needs decreasing? I love oatmeal, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, and many other whole grains! I love beans, too , but have to be careful about the timing of eating them. Once ate a big bowl of chili the night before a 20 mile training run. Good thing there were bathrooms near the trail!

    I have to sprinkle some fiber powder into my protein shakes to meet my goal! It’s much harder than I ever would have guessed to get to that number. But I feel so much better when I do!!
