Tips for Staying Healthy Over the Holidays (and a SmartyPants Giveaway!)

Disclaimer: Through my affiliation with Fit Approach, I received SmartyPants Adult Complete Travel Packs in exchange for this review.  As always, all opinions are my own.

Its hard to believe that Thanksgiving is one week from tomorrow!  With Thanksgiving right around the corner, that also means that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is almost upon us.  But just because you’re spending extra time with friends and loved ones doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your health or fitness levels.

So what can you do in order to stay healthy during the busy holiday season?

healthy holiday tips

  1. Pencil your workouts into your calendar along with your social and family events.  That way, you’ll be more likely to keep on top of your fitness routine and will know which days you might need to make some adjustments.
  2. Don’t be too hard on yourself.  Missing one or two workouts won’t be the end of the world.  December is always a busy month for so many of us, and life is all about finding balance.  And just like a missed workout here or there isn’t a huge deal, shortening a workout here or there also isn’t a huge deal.  Its better to get in 30 minutes of activity than perhaps the full hour that you might have planned on.
  3. Meal plan each week and keep healthy foods in the house.  Even if you find yourself eating out more, especially at holiday parties, having healthy foods stocked at home will help ensure that you’re finding balance in what you eat instead of resorting to processed foods, or even worse, take out, after returning from a long day out of the house.
  4. Register for and participate in a holiday themed race.  Last year, I ran both a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning and then a Christmas themed race in early December.  Although I’m no longer running at this point in my pregnancy, I still hope to get a walk in on Thanksgiving day to help balance the hearty meal that I’ll be eating with family.
  5. Find a way to hold yourself accountable, such as an online fitness challenge group.  Just like last year, I’m participating in the Holiday Sweat Challenge with Fit Approach.   Although I’m working out less than I was when I participated in the challenge last year, its still a lot of fun to have the support of other like minded people during a busy time of the year.
  6. Take your vitamins!  Its easy to forget to take your daily vitamins and supplements when you’re extra busy, especially if you’re traveling.  But your vitamins are super important, especially when life is busy and you’re constantly on the go.

For additional tips, be sure to check out my post from last November on 5 Tips for Staying on Track During the Holidays.

My tip for staying healthy over the holidays is to always have a water bottle with you! I’m really bad at drinking enough water as it is so I always have a tube of NUUN with me as well!

  2. Pam says:

Great list! I always have a January race on my calendar and that keeps me focused on workouts, healthy eating and training during the holidays!

  3. Oh yum! I love these vitamins! They are great!

  4. Renata says:

I wash my hands constantly to keep healthy in the winter especially!

  5. Great tips, Kathryn! For me, the biggest thing is making workouts a priority, at least 3 times a week. And, I try to get in my servings of veggies and fruit before indulging in fun holiday snacks. Keeping my baseline healthy habits allows me to indulge a bit. 🙂

  6. Balance – it’s ok to eat treats if the traditions and memories will mean more than the calories

  7. I love those Smarty Pants vitamins. I was eating them all weekend after getting some free samples from the Rock n Roll expo.

  8. Elle says:

Good list! Yes, handwashing is soooo important. At any time really. And I think getting enough rest and not getting overwhelmed is key. Enjoy the holidays!

  9. These sound good, I recently saw them in a store. I am trying to eat healthy and I drink apple cider vinegar to keep colds at bay.

  10. These are all great tips! I’ve gotten a few samples of Smarty Pants vitamins and my sons love them.

  13. Great tips. It’s better to do something than nothing at all…it can be tough to get those workouts in when you’re surrounded by family! I’m really looking forward to the holidays.

  14. Wash, wash, wash your hands!!! And drink that water! Those are my tips! Especially since I’m a preschool teacher surrounded by germs!

  15. Great tips! I think like you mentioned picking a holiday race is a fun way to keep it up, even when the weather starts turning bad and the yummy foods around us pile up:)

  16. Yes…yes….yes… and yes!! Wonderful advice!

I had to write my workout out so I can see them and hold myself accountable! I am signed up for a thanksgiving race, holiday race and doing my last half of 2015 Dec 5th. Great way to stay focused and motivated 🙂

  17. I love gummy vitamins so I should go enter your giveaway!

  18. Great idea for penciling in workouts with everything else. Great way to keep everything on schedule!

  19. Drink lots of water! It’s easy to forget that when it gets colder outside, but it’s still so important to your health.

  20. Great tips! I need to be better about NOT splurging too much. Although I still workout during the holidays, I find that I’m like whatever I can have that cookie/ice cream/cake…it’s thanksgiving! or whatever holiday haha.

  21. I love your tips and signing up for themed holiday races is definitely a fun way to go! The Smarty Pants Vitamins look great. Travel packs would be great as I hate bringing the whole bottle!
