September 2015 Monthly Goals

I really wish time would start slowing down a bit.  Of course, I say that now but I’m sure as I near the end of my pregnancy I’ll start saying that I wish time would speed up.  Regardless, it continues to amaze me just how fast this summer has flown by, especially this past month.

I usually set three goals each month, but for August set five goals.  The trend in the past when I’ve set five monthly goals is that I struggle to meet some or most of them, partly because I feel like I’ve stretched myself too thin.  I’m happy to say that I most certainly did not feel that way this past month, and am very proud of all that I accomplished in working towards meeting my monthly goals.

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical at least 75 miles.

Grade: A

Last night’s 5k put me nearly 6 miles over my monthly goal.  And that’s not counting any of the miles that I walked while we were at Disney World.  And I ran 63 of my 80 miles last month, the most that I’ve run since March.  It was definitely a successful month when it came to my mileage, and my overall workout stats.

2.  Continue to listen to my body.

Grade: A

Sure, I would have loved to fit in more cross training and/or strength training days.  But now that I’m 23.5 weeks pregnant, its more important that I listen to my body and give it the rest that it needs instead of pushing myself too hard.

3.  Weight train at least once a week.

Grade: B

Did I reach my goal?  Absolutely.  But would I have loved to weight train more than once a week?  You bet.  It just didn’t happen.

4.  Work out at least three times while on vacation.

Grade: A

Other than my monthly mileage, this might be the goal that I’m most proud of reaching.  Often times when we’re on vacation, I struggle to fit in all of my planned workouts.  But while we were in Florida, I not only completed all of my planned workouts, I got in a couple of extra as well.

5.  Enjoy the month’s social activities.

Grade: A

It was a very busy month, not just with our travels but also with a wedding and a baby shower.  And not once did I let myself feel guilty about taking the extra rest that my tired pregnant body needed.  In order to make sure that I could fully enjoy the month’s activities, I did move my 14 miler to a Friday morning, and I’m so glad that I made the decision to do so, otherwise it would have been extremely difficult to fully enjoy my sister-in-law’s baby shower the next day.

Although I was successful in reaching all five of my goals last month, I’m not going to push my luck this month.  Between getting back into my school routine and continuing to progress in my pregnancy, I think its important to return to my usual routine of setting three goals for the month.

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical at least 60 miles.

Once I complete my fifth half marathon on Sunday, I plan to start reducing my mileage, particularly the number of miles that I’m running.  Yes, I have Rock ‘n’ Roll Philly on October 31st, but I’ll likely be walking most if not the entire race.  I’ll share more about the plan for RnRPhilly after I run Virginia Beach this weekend.

2.  Continue to listen to my body.

Part of why I plan to start reducing my mileage after this weekend’s race is because running is becoming more and more difficult each week.  As baby boy continues to grow, not only am I carrying more weight but during some workouts I’m also combating round ligament pain.  While I want to remain active for the duration of my pregnancy, I also need to listen to what my body tells me it needs, which some days is simply rest.

3.  Weight train at least once a week.

Although I’ve drastically reduced the amount of weight that I’m lifting, my OB continues to support me doing light weight training.  I know that continuing to keep up with this will not only make delivery easier to handle, it’ll also make postpartum recovery easier on me as well.

    Great job with those goals for August! It’s definitely impressive that you kept up with the workouts while on vacation. Traveling makes it hard but it seems like the great hotel gym and beautiful beach made it a bit better 🙂

    Awesome job with your goals! Totally crushed them 🙂 I’m hoping to be better about getting the sleep and rest I need this month. I’ve found myself totally exhausted some days so hopefully focusing on good, quality sleep will help out with that!

  7. I think time is going way. too. fast. over here as well. I can’t believe it is September and I leave for California Thursday. I feel like I was just planning to go to England yesterday and I’m already back! Now I am determined to make the most of the next six weeks or so before my new job begins.

  15. Awesome job on nailing your August Goals!!! I have so many goals I want to set for September but am afraid I will be setting myself up for failure. I hate setting goals and not accomplishing them…but I think not setting goals are worse than not trying…sorry…light bulb moment there. lol

    My September goals are to 30 Days of NO EXCUSES!!! I will track all my meals…do 30 minutes of activity every day, eat (relatively) clean and post my daily outcome. I also would like to lose 10 lbs in the month of September.
