Happy Throwback Thursday everybody! Today I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane. This weekend marks one year since I ran my first, and only, 20k. Its a unique distance, at 12.4 miles, and there aren’t many races out there that offer runners the chance to run a 20k.
On August 17, 2014 I ran the Leesburg 20k. It was my last double digit long run in my half marathon training for last year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon. (And tomorrow I’ll be completing my last double digit long run in preparation for this year’s RnRVB.) Though hilly, I loved the course since it was an out and back and it allowed me to be able to know exactly what lied ahead of me during the second half of the race.

This race is put on by Potomac River Running, a local running store that has a great reputation for well organized races. I’ve run several of their races, the most recent one being the Firecracker 5k on 4th of July. I loved the adorable medal that I received after I crossed the finish line in Leesburg last August, and it remains one of my favorite medals to date.
I had hoped to run this race again this year, but our schedule just didn’t allow for that to happen. Who knows, maybe I’ll be back in Leesburg in 2016, of course with an infant there to cheer me on!
QOTD: What were you doing one year ago this weekend?
About a year ago I was getting set to do my first triathlon in Erie–it was incredible! I ran the Leesburg 20K in 2013, it’s such a fun race, I hope to do it again in 2016 as well!
Congrats on completing a triathlon!
I was running this race as well a year ago! I actually really liked it! Kind of bummed I didn’t register for it again this year!
I think that registration is still open if you want to still do it. If we weren’t going to be out of town this weekend, I’d definitely be running it on Sunday.
That is a cute medal and bib too! I’ve never done a 20k. Last year at this time I was one week out from running a 10 nautical miler. That’s actually 11. something miles. How’s that for weird? But because I had 16 on my plan for NYCM, I ran 5 miles before the race. Ugh.
Wow, another unique race distance!
I’ve definitely never run that distance! How fun!
Its always fun to run unique races and race distances.
That medal is really cute! This one hasn’t been on my radar but I’m going to have to keep it in mind for next year. That sounds like a fun distance to add to the list.
You should definitely consider it in the future.
That medal’s adorable! I don’t know of any 20k distance around DFW. Races have started including the 10k but from there it’s the half distance.
Its definitely a rare and hard to find race distance.
Every third weekend of August I go on a camping trip with my husbands family. We are heading out tonight and I can’t wait!
Hope you all have a great trip!
Two years ago I was at my first SeaWheeze, but I have no idea WHAT I was doing one year ago!
I’d like to run a 20k race, it seems slightly more reasonable than a half. ha!
There’s definitely many, many more half marathons out there.
A year ago today… hmmm… I think I was at Blogfest!
I would love to go to Blogfest one year.
I love those oddball distances! Instant PR! Haha…
Absolutely!
That’s amazing! Great work. Its really sad I can’t remember that far back lol
Sometimes its hard to remember what I was doing yesterday.
That is one of the cutest medals I’ve seen. 20k is an odd distance. It’s great for someone that may be training for a half(like you did)or think a half maybe too much. Races always seem to go so much smother when they are well organized.
Absolutely!
Great medal!! I have absolutely no idea what I was doing one year ago, though I’m sure if I search my blog archives I can figure it out 🙂 have a great weekend & enjoy your LAST long run before the race!
Thanks Janice! I got my run in this morning, and now I can enjoy the rest of the weekend.
I really want to run that race some time, but I’m almost always out of town then. In fact, one year ago, I was likely doing exactly what I’m doing now – drinking coffee at my parents’ house and getting ready to run.
Its funny how sometimes we’re doing the exact same thing on the same day each year.
Super cool medal! One yaer ago.. we were living in California and I was gearing up for another year of homeschooling the boys. 🙂
This year’s race medal looks to be just as cute too.
So sad I won’t be running it this year as well. Maybe in 2016! Of course its was nice to see you and Preston there!
20k..interesting distance! If only I could find something like that around here because I am looking for a longer distance race for my marathon training.
