Shamrock Half Marathon Training Log – Week 8

What a crazy week its been!  And I don’t mean crazy in the sense of how busy I was (although I was busy), I mean crazy in the sense of the weather!  Tuesday we were supposed to get 1-2 inches of snow, but wound up with closer to 4 inches of snow.  While 4 inches doesn’t seem like a lot, the snow started during morning rush hour, and since this is the DC area, well, things around here did not go well on Tuesday.  I feel lucky to have made it to work in only 50 minutes, as it took Preston over 2.5 hours to get to work that day!  The weather led to our school district trending on Twitter with protests about the decision to not cancel school for the day.  We received a series of apology statements from my school district, which led to them very quickly calling two hour delays for Wednesday and Friday, and a last minute change to a full closure on Thursday.  It was quite the crazy week!

I didn’t let the weather put a damper on my training though.  Despite how cold it was (the high ranged from single digits to the 20s for several days this week), I bundled up and made it to the gym three nights this past week.  This week was also my first week of back to back training days: a 1 mile powerwalk on Saturday followed by an 8 mile run yesterday.  My current plan is to walk most of the 8k (the first race of the Dolphin Challenge) so that I can push myself to a new half marathon PR the next day.

The highlights of my week were my runs on Thursday and Sunday.  On Thursday, I ran 3.5 miles on the treadmill without stopping to walk once.  While I’ve successfully ran several 5ks on the treadmill without walking, Thursday was the first time that I increased my distance.

Yesterday I did something else that I’ve never done before: I ran outside on snowy, and sometimes icy, sidewalks.  I didn’t expect them to be as icy as they were, and had I realized how bad they were I would have probably headed straight for the treadmill.  But I didn’t, and somehow my pace was faster than last weekend’s long run pace.

Last weekend my pace for my 6 mile run was 10:33 min/mile.  I'm not sure how I was faster this weekend given the snowy and icy sidewalks, but it must be a sign of me getting mentally and physically stronger!

Mon 1/5 – 3.10 mile run on the treadmill, 0.32 mile cool down walk, chest, back, arms, shoulders, abs, glutes

Tues 1/6 – Rest day

Wed 1/7 – 30 minutes on the elliptical, kettlebell squat swings, abs, arms, shoulders, legs

Thurs 1/8 – 3.50 mile run on the treadmill, 0.41 mile cool down walk

Fri 1/9 – Rest day

Sat 1/10 – 1.16 mile powerwalk around the neighborhood

Sun 1/11 – 8.03 mile run around the neighborhood, 0.43 mile cool down walk

Total Weekly Mileage – 19.64 miles (7.52 miles more than week 7)

Total Shamrock Half Marathon Training Mileage – 96.88 miles

The icing on the cake of this incredible week of training was following all of the Disney World Marathon Weekend participants online.  Congrats to everybody who participated!  I loved seeing all of the pictures, tweets, and Facebook posts throughout the weekend, as well as being able to watch some of the live feed from runDisney online.  Special congrats to my friend Kathleen who not only completed the Dopey Challenge but also ran her first marathon yesterday.  Although I was a bit sad to not be there this year, the excitement from the weekend has me eager to run during Marathon Weekend in 2016.

  1. I watched the live stream of the marathon for about an hour yesterday. It’s so inspirational. And while I’ve done the 5k during marathon weekend, my new goal is to run the half next year. And maybe something bigger in 2017. Registration for Wine and Dine is coming soon and I am very tempted to sign up for that.

    Hi Kathryn! I live in Falls Church and I’m also training for the Shamrock half. My week was remarkably similar to yours — 3 indoor runs on the treadmill due to the ice/snow, and waxing nostalgic over pics/posts about Marathon Weekend. I ran my first marathon at WDW with my dad last year, and had a fantastic time — definitely wanting to get back down there for another runDisney event!

    Great job on your runs! Whenever there’s a sign of ice, I definitely stick to the treadmill. I’m so clumsy, I know I’d fall and end up injuring myself.

    I think I’d love to do the Dopey Challenge one day, but it’s so expensive! I think I’d also want to do it with a good friend so I need to find a recruit 😉

  9. I was so annoyed with how icy the paths were yesterday. So disappointed in Rock Creek Park. But by the time I got to the monuments and such it was pretty clear so I was able to speed up and make up for time lost walking on the ice! Great work this week!

  12. Great workouts this week! I’m heading back from Wdw marsthon weekend right now after doing Dopey and then heading to DL for Star Wars weekend. Then Princess and Pixie challenge!

    No lie the Wdw marathon was the best Disney race I have run! Unfortunately I will have to sit out next year-it’s a rough time of year to travel with me working at a college and also being in school myself

  15. I watched the live feed of the WDW Marathon finish, and now I think I want to run Goofy or Dopey in 2016! How crazy am I?

    Great job training! It’s always awesome to see improvements in your pace/distance/stamina…you’re doing awesome with making great progress!
