January 2015 Monthly Goals

Where has 2014 gone?  Its hard to believe that today is the last day of 2014 and that tomorrow kicks off a brand new year!

This past month has been a bit of a challenge, especially the second half of the month.  I kept on track with my goals, especially my mileage goal, during the first half of the month, but then between vacation and then getting sick, I barely worked out during the second half of the month.  To say that I’m tired of being sick and ready to get back to my normal workout routine is an understatement, but I know that if I push myself too hard too soon that it’ll take longer to finally get over being sick.

With that said, how did I do with each of my three goals this past month?

dec 2014 goals

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical a total of 70 miles.

Grade: C

My final mileage total for December was 36.5 miles, only half of my monthly goal.  This past month was my lowest mileage month ever.  I know that things would have been different had I not been sick for the past week, so I’m trying to not be too hard on myself.

2.  Cross train at least once a week.

Grade: B

By practicing yoga, I’ve been able to maintain my cross training goal.  Its been the only physical activity that I’ve been able to do while sick.

3.  Maintain my weight.

Grade: A

Despite all of the temptations that I faced while on vacation and with several Christmas meals, I was able to avoid packing on extra calories.  I’m very proud of the healthy food choices that I made while we were away from home for ten days.

Given my challenges during the second half of the month, it should be of no surprise that two of my three goals are the exact same for January.

jan 2015 goals

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical at least 70 miles.

This was both one of my November goals and one of my December goals.  This will be my third attempt at reaching my mileage goal.  With my long run mileage increasing as I continue to prepare for Shamrock, I’m confident that January is the month that I’ll reach this goal.

2.  Cross train at least once a week.

Cross training is so important with all of the running that I’m doing.  Hopefully in addition to practicing yoga I’ll also be able to use the elliptical at least once a week.

3.  Get enough sleep.

I’ll fully admit that I did not get enough sleep in December.  Between stress at work, preparing for being away from home, and then being on vacation, I slept very little.  I’m sure this is part of what led to me getting sick.  I need to take better care of myself this next month, and that starts with getting enough sleep.

  1. Way to go maintaining your weight throughout the holidays w all the temptations. Sleep is definitely something I lack as well. My work schedule had been not ideal lately and aurely does catch up to you.

You did great with your weight Kathryn and for 10 days of being away that is remarkable. My goal for January includes extra sleep and a cruise vacation should help with that one. Moving definitely robbed me of lots of sleep while preparing for houseguests and moving on 12/13.

  3. I like how you have monthly mileage goals and they aren’t limited to running! I think I might start doing this for myself (esp since I am more likely to be running and on the elliptical or recumbant bike rather than running). The month of December is always chaotic and I love to get back on track in January!

That’s impressive that you were able to maintain your weight with the hoildays and being sick! Great job on that. I’ve gained a couple pounds but hoping to get them off with being good in January. The sleep goal is sooo important! I find that a lack of quality sleep really bleeds into the rest of my life in so many ways.

  5. I really like your idea of linking mileage goals to both walking and the elliptical. This is a great idea and a way to make sure that even if you aren’t running, you are still getting those important cross training miles in. I might use this idea for myself in the future! Happy New Year!

  6. Being sick can be so frustrating, especially when you have workout/fitness goals that it keeps you from. Good job keeping in mind to not be too hard on yourself because of that!

I want to keep up with my monthly mileage like you do. How do you get to that through RunKeeper? Can you do it on the free version, or do you have to get the upgrade?

  7. My goal for January is to continue training for my big February race smartly. 🙂 I need to work on eating a bit better and core work.

  8. Jennifer says:

Nice job on maintaining your weight while on vacation and during the holidays – always an impressive feat 🙂 December is always a packed month glad you took care of yourself while you were sick. I have no doubt January will be a better month for you. Happy New Year to you and Preston!

  9. one of my goals this year is to track my mileage – i’m really bad at doing that when i’m not locked in to a training cycle (and sometimes even then). i have a new training journal so i’m hoping that helps! 🙂 happy new year!

  10. getting enough sleep is a good one!
