Friday Five – December 19th – Christmas Traditions

This week’s Friday Five theme with the DC Trifecta is Holiday Traditions.  Since Preston and I got married, we have yet to spend one Christmas at our own home, and this year is no different.  With our families in two different states, there has been no consistency to our Christmas celebrations since we got married.  But there are some traditions that we’ve either instituted ourselves or taken part in with our families since we got married.

1.  Christmas Date Night or Weekend Away

Since we started dating, Preston and I have made it a priority to have a special Christmas Date  during the month of December.  This has usually involved a nice dinner out in the city and seeing the National Christmas Tree.  This year we mixed things up though and made it a Christmas Weekend Away, which included us running the Christmas Town Dash 8k at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg.  During such a busy time of year, its nice to be able to set time aside just for the two of us.

2.  Decorating the tree together

There’s nothing more magical than decorating the tree and being able to enjoy looking at it during what is usually a very busy and stressful time of the year.

3.  Christmas Eve service at church

Going to church on Christmas Eve is extremely important to Preston and I and helps us to keep the focus of Christmas on what it really is – Jesus’ birth.

4.  Christmas Eve dinner with my side of the family

When we’re in Illinois visiting my side of the family, we always enjoy the annual tradition of Christmas Eve dinner out at a nice restaurant.  My family has been doing this for as long as I can remember.  Its fun to dress up, go out to a nice dinner, and then finish the evening with a special Christmas Eve service at church.

5.  Christmas Eve pajamas with Preston’s side of the family

Preston’s family has had a long standing tradition of everybody in the family receiving new pajamas on Christmas Eve, which everybody then wears to bed and while opening presents on Christmas morning.

QOTD: What is your favorite Holiday tradition?

As always, thank you to the DC Trifecta Bloggers (Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!) for hosting the weekly Friday Five Link Up.  Be sure to check out their posts as well!
