September 2014 Monthly Goals

Where did August go?  I feel like I just wrote my August goals, and now its time to reflect on them and write my September ones!  Having run two big races last month – the Leesburg 20k two weeks ago and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon on Sunday – my big focus during August was of course on staying on track with my training.  I’ll admit, I thought I was a bit ambitious with my goals for August since I usually only focus on three and instead I chose to strive for five.  Throughout the month I was able to focus on at least four of them each week.

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical a total of 75 miles.

Grade: A

If I worked for a school district that utilized a grading scale that included A+, that’s what I’d give myself for this goal.  Not only did I meet my mileage goal, but I crushed it, having logged over 80 miles last month!

2.  Practice yoga.

Grade: C

I did well with my yoga practice during the first half of the month, and then neglected it altogether during the second half of the month.  Oops!

3.  Continue to embrace the hills.

Grade: A

During every single outdoor run last month, I faced the hills with confidence.  My hill training not only paid off during the Leesburg 20k, but helped to make me super strong in preparation for Sunday’s half marathon.

4.  Reincorporate the elliptical into my routine.

Grade: C

It seems as though my mind was only capable of handling yoga or the elliptical last month, not both.  During the second half of the month I did use the elliptical, but it was neglected during the first half.

5.  Make weight training a priority again.

Grade: A

Every time I went to the gym I focused on weight training after my run or time on the elliptical.  And every time I went to the gym, I walked out with that good sore feeling, more than satisfied with the hard work that I put in.

I felt like reaching for five goals last month was a bit of a stretch.  With today being the first day of school with my students for the 2014-2015 school year, I know that getting back into my school routine is going to take some adjustment.  Since I don’t want to overdo it, I’ll be returning to my usual three goal focus for the month of September.

1.  Run, walk, and elliptical a total of 50 miles.

While this is 30 fewer miles than what I logged last month, my body is screaming for a break.  Although I have the Army Ten Miler coming up in six weeks, my focus over the next six weeks will be conditioning and maintaining the work hard that I put in over the summer.  My body is telling me that it needs a short break from the high mileage runs, and I’m going to listen to it.

2.  Practice yoga.

With the start of the new school year, practicing yoga will be more important than it has been for the past couple of months.  It’ll be super important that I use yoga as a tool to help me relax after long days at school.  It’ll also help in stretching my sore muscles.

3.  Listen to my body.

I’m going into this school year telling myself that I don’t want a repeat of what happened last year.  Its been seven months since I was in the hospital, and I don’t want to come anywhere close to that happening again this school year.  With that said, it’ll be so important that if my body and/or brain is screaming for extra rest that I listen to it.

  1. I love that you grade your goal achievements- I would have never thought of writing them down like that. I also think listening to your body is so important and definitely helps to avoid injury. My goals are just to make it through the 4 races I signed up for this month, haha!

    I love how you make goals and evaluate them. It’s simple and it’s brilliant. I try to do yoga once a week to stretch sore muscles and force me to relax. I would do it more often if I had time, but I don’t and I’m just at the point where I can practice on my own at home.
    This month I only hope to survive a 50k and then allow myself to recover.

    Great job with your goals! I always find it helpful to evaluate my progress and move forward. I’m not sure what my Sept goals are. I keep toying with the idea of not having any goals for a month. That’s way out of my comfort zone so we’ll see.

  6. I love that you “grade” yourself on each item! I usually give myself a “needs improvement” or “great job!” lol. Great job last month! Kick some more butt this month!

    Great goals and I agree that grading yourself each month may give you the push to try a little harder. My biggest goal for September is to get my mileage increases in without causing any injury. MCM is around the corner.
