Wow, what a month July was! Although I only ran one race, the Firecracker 5k, it was a huge month personally. Between closing on our house, moving into our house, and working on making our house feel like a home, July has been anything but boring. Add in spending the past two weeks working on my school district’s annual summer curriculum development project, and you have a recipe for a super busy month.
On the fitness front, I met two of my three monthly goals. Unfortunately, I completely failed at meeting my third goal.
1. Run, walk, and elliptical a total of 70 miles.
Grade: A
Goal met, and I cannot wait to see where my mileage total continues to climb to! (Note: I didn’t get onto the elliptical once this past month, and I definitely need to reincorporate it back into my training routine.)
2. Make yoga a priority.
Grade: F
I only practiced yoga once during the month of July. Not good. This needs to change!
3. Stay on track with my half marathon training.
Grade: B+
Despite how busy July was, I only missed two runs. Only two. I’m beyond impressed with myself for being able to keep up with my planned runs despite moving into our new house.
After a mostly productive July, I have high hopes and ambitions for August. As I started listing out my goals, I realized that this month’s list is a bit longer than usual, as there are five things I want to focus on this month.
1. Run, walk, and elliptical a total of 75 miles.
Adding five more miles to my monthly goal seems like another natural progression, especially since I have three runs this month that will be over 10 miles each (12.5 this weekend, the Leesburg 20k on August 17th, and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon on August 31st).
2. Practice yoga.
I’m getting tired of saying that I will make yoga a priority. I need to just buckle down and do it and get back into a regular routine of practicing yoga, especially before school starts next month.
3. Continue to embrace the hills.
Instead of choosing routes that have me avoiding hills, I embraced hills and focused on incorporating them into my outdoor runs last month. My hope is that by embracing hills as I train to run on a mainly flat course in Virginia Beach that it’ll help me to finish the race that much faster.
4. Reincorporate the elliptical into my routine.
I miss the elliptical, and I want to focus on getting the elliptical back into my cross training routine.
5. Make weight training a priority again.
It was difficult to keep up with my weight training since I had limited gym access last month. Now that I have regular access to the gym again, I want to once again make weights a priority.
QOTD: What are your goals for August?
As always, thank you to the DC Trifecta Bloggers (Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!) for hosting the weekly Friday Five Link Up. Be sure to check out their posts as well!
We have similar goals for August. My mileage goal is 80, to include everything – walking, running, biking, rowing, and swimming. It’s more of a way to make me track my workouts. I’m kind of bad with that. Yoga is also a focus and I have no choice but to run hills!
I too find that having a mileage goal helps me to keep close track of my workouts.
Sometimes it’s so had to change workout methods/routines when you’re so used to what you’re already doing.
Absolutely agree! Its hard to break a routine and integrate other activities into it.
Don’t be too hard on yourself; it’s really hard to keep up with things like fitness when you move. You stay super active moving boxes and packing/unpacking, and all that activity makes you really tired. Good luck meeting this month’s goals! My big goal for August is to follow a training plan for a marathon I’m planning to run in October. Happy Friday!
For the most part, I’ve been able to accept the fact that not everything was going to get done, especially since moving is a physical activity itself. Good luck with your training!
I love how you have monthly goals and check in with them. Great job on them! See you in Va Beach!
See you there!
Great job on the July goals! That’s impressive that you met the mileage goal and the training goal with everything you had on your plate this month.
Thanks!
I find it easier to do yoga in the winter for some reason. I just want to be out and about in the summer more. Congrats on the house and the other 2 goals.
Completely agree! Although on overcast days like today all I want to do is stay inside, lol.
I definitely need to make strength training a major priority in my training too! I just need to find time! Ahh!
So much to do, so little time!
One of my major goals is to stick with my marathon training. I start training for my first one next week! AHHH!
Good luck!
You did great on your July goals. Don’t be too hard on yourself!
Thanks for the support 🙂
flexibility is SO important when run training! that’s why I dig Piyo!
I really need to do more yoga and stretching
great goals — i think you are going to feel like you have so much time this month since the moving is done 🙂
I certainly hope so!
My only goal for August is to get through RnR un injured! -M
Great goal!
My goals is to survive Summer vacation with the kids.

My goal during the school year is to survive with my students, lol.
I need to get a monthly goal plan. Right now, I’m just aiming to stay on track for my 10 miler training and add in some strength training for Tough Mudder in November. I’m also bad at sticking to yoga practice- I need to just go more!
Needing to do more yoga seems to be a common theme among many of us.
Great job Kathryn. I think you are going to have a great August!
Thanks!
