Tomorrow is the big day – the day we’re renting a U-Haul and moving our belongings, or at least most of them, from our apartment into our new house. Over the past week and a half since we closed, its slowly been sinking in that the house is ours. We’ve been knee deep in cleaning and painting since we closed, and of course the process has been much slower than expected. We had hoped to have the entire house painted before we move in, but that’s not going to happen. Depending on what we accomplish at the house this afternoon and evening, we’ll be lucky to have our entire main floor and master bedroom done, but we have yet to touch the basement or the rest of the upstairs.
Life as we know it has been completely turned upside down since closing. Between cleaning and painting at the house, packing at the apartment, and Preston working most of the week, there hasn’t been much time for anything else. We’ve been completely exhausted each night when we go to sleep, and to a degree, have become a bit delirious from the lack of sleep and a normal schedule.
With that said, there’s a number of things that I’ve loved about preparing to move…
1. My workouts are no longer based at the gym but rather at the house, usually with a paint roller in hand.
I’ve gotten quite the upper body workout this week. Painting is no easy task! And with the AC off for much of the week since we’ve had the windows open in order to help with the paint fumes, the thermostat has read upwards of 85 degrees most days, so I’m also sweating away the food I’ve eaten this week. And let me tell you, spackling holes and then sanding them down is no easy task either. I’ve built up quite the sweat throughout the week!
2. There are few, if any, dishes to wash. This balances out all the other cleaning I’ve done this past week.
I despise doing dishes. Luckily, at the house we’ve been eating off of paper plates or out of take out containers. The only cooking tools I currently have at the house are a cookie sheet and a pizza cutter – I’ve lost track of how many frozen pizzas we’ve eaten this week. The last time I cooked a real meal at our apartment was Monday evening when I used up the last of the ground sausage in the fridge to make spaghetti. Other than still eating my usual breakfast, which is either Greek yogurt with berries on top or a bowl of cereal, my diet was been anything but normal this week. But I guess that’s to be expected.
3. You don’t know where anything is.
Although I’ve been keeping track of all the packed boxes on an Excel spreadsheet, everything in our apartment is in complete disarray. At the moment, our apartment looks more like a warehouse than an actual place that people live. I can’t wait to move everything into our house and finally put things away!
4. Getting dressed each morning has been super easy. Where is a t-shirt and a pair of shorts that I don’t care about?
I wish that throughout the school year I could roll out of bed, shower, throw on random clothes, and just throw my hair up in a pony tail. I’d be out the door much faster if I didn’t have to worry about what I’m wearing, let alone do my hair or make up. The biggest decision I’ve had to make each day is whether or not I really care about the t-shirt that I’m putting on since its likely to wind up with paint or dirt all over it.
5. Doggy cuddles have been more and more meaningful each day when I get back to the apartment.
Poor Riley has spent quite a bit of time by himself this week. We took him to the house while we were cleaning, but I read online that paint fumes can be extremely toxic for dogs, potentially more harmful than they are to pregnant women. Thus, we haven’t taken him to the house since we started painting. Each night when I get back to the apartment, he’s eagerly awaited snuggle time on the couch. With how exhausted I’ve been, I’ve haven’t turned his offer down!
