Happy early Father’s Day to all of the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and godfathers out there! With Father’s Day being on Sunday, I wanted to honor my dad with five of my most favorite memories that we’ve shared together over the years.
1. My afternoon naps in his office and his reading of law school books to me
Okay, so I don’t exactly remember this myself since I was a baby, but my parents’ had different work schedules when I was a young child. My dad worked on Capitol Hill, and my mom was a nurse at one of DC’s local hospitals. Since my mom worked the evening shift, she often dropped me off at my dad’s office, where I napped while he finished his workday. Since he was in law school as well, our evenings often included him reading law school books to me. I truly believe that part of why my dad and I are as close as we are is because of the amount of time we spent together when I was a baby.
2. Working at his office throughout high school and college
Every summer that I was in high school and the summers after my freshman and sophomore years of college, I worked at my dad’s office. My responsibilities included answering the phone, being the first line of contact with clients, and often working on annual reorganization projects. I attribute my OCDness and organizational skills to all those summers that I spent working at his office.
3. Exploring DC and sightseeing at many of the popular DC landmarks when I was in college
Although my parents now live in Illinois, my dad also has clients here in the DC area, and is usually here a couple of times a year for meetings. Every time he is out here, we make a point to spend time together. When I was in college, that often included sightseeing and exploring some of our favorite monuments and museums.
4. Walking down the aisle together at my wedding in 2011

I was very emotional walking down the aisle, and I wouldn’t have made it down the aisle if it hadn’t been for my dad holding my hand and whispering to me how special of a day it was.
5. Our father-daughter dance at my wedding

My dad and I danced to Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” at my wedding. This song is very special to us, as when I was a baby my parents often played a Whitney Houston album in the car. This song was included in that album.
QOTD: What is one of your most cherished memories that you share with one of the father-figures in your life?
As always, thank you to the DC Trifecta Bloggers (Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!) for hosting the weekly Friday Five Link Up. Be sure to check out their posts as well!
Also, don’t forget about the Vega Sport giveaway that I’m currently hosting. You have through Monday to enter for your chance to win a sampling of endurance gels and protein bars.
What a sweet tribute for your dad! I loved the wedding pic. One of my fondest memories is a weekly Friday stop to the ice cream store with my dad/siblings. When I went home a few months ago I saw it was closed – a bit sad.
I can’t imagine how you felt the first time that you saw the closed ice cream store. So sad.
Love this tribute Kathryn. One of my favorite memories was during one of our trips with my parents, was when Dad and I spent the day in Pisa while Mom was in Florence and Tom was in Houston giving a presentation (long story, but he had to miss two days of our cruise). Being one of four children, I did not do alot of things solo with my father. But this day was special and we had so much fun!
I have two sisters, so I know exactly what you mean about those individual moments being rare, but precious.
What a sweet, sweet post!! I’m not particularly close to my dad but I love reading about others who are 🙂
Thanks 🙂
Aww, what beautiful pics of you and your daddy. I’m so sorry he lives far away from you now. You must miss him!
I do miss him, but I’m thankful for the time we do get to spend together, and that business sometimes brings him out this way.
Aw, I did a Daddy post today too. This made me tear up. One of my fave moments was dancing together at my wedding as well.
Those couple of minutes that I spent dancing with him were so special. I’m sure they were for you as well.
Okay, now that I’m a blubbering idiot after reading this, what a beautiful post! I lost my dad a month before I graduated from high school. Even though I missed out on so much with him, I’m so grateful for the time we did have. As the hubby always tells me, I definitely inherited his “concrete” head, lol! 🙂 I’ll take it!
So sorry to hear that Kimberley, but I’m sure you have many great memories from the time that you did get to spend together.
This is such a nice post 🙂 I love that your dad read law school books to you when you were a baby!
How many people can say that? 🙂
Beautiful post! I love the pics from your wedding. You guys clearly have such an amazing bond. ❤
I never saw my dad much while I was growing up, but we have a very good relationship now and when he walked me down the aisle at my wedding it was just the most special time. The pics I have of that moment are some of the dearest to me!
So glad that you’re able to create such special memories now with your dad. 🙂
