Preston and I arrived back home yesterday evening after spending four nights in the Outer Banks to celebrate my sister-in-law’s wedding. I’ll share more pictures from our time at the beach once I have time to upload the over 300 photos we took on our camera (wait, people actually still use those?!?), but for now here’s a sneak preview from my sister-in-law’s gorgeous wedding.
Coming home from vacation, especially the beach, is never easy, but with work, half marathon training, and everything else going on right now (especially the craziness associated with buying our first house), there’s no option but to jump into this week head on and ready to go.
My workouts were pretty much nonexistent this past week. I did run twice – on Monday and Thursday – but with the home inspection Tuesday after work, then driving down to the Outer Banks Wednesday after work, and several wedding and family related activities throughout the weekend, there just wasn’t much time to properly train this past week.

I did run once along the beach while we in the Outer Banks, and I ended my run with this gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean
Mon 5/26 – 4.00 mile hill workout in the neighborhood, 0.34 mile cool down walk, kettlebell squats, abs, glutes, chest, back, arms
Tues 5/27 – “Rest” day, aka long day at work followed by our home inspection
Wed 5/28 – “Rest” day, aka travel day to the Outer Banks after work
Thurs 5/29 – 3.18 mile run at the beach, 0.32 mile cool down walk
Fri 5/30 – “Rest” day, aka my sister-in-law’s wedding day
Sat 5/31 – Rest day
Sun 6/1 – “Rest” day, aka travel day home
Total Weekly Mileage – 7.84 miles (5.73 miles less than week 4)
Total Half Marathon Training Mileage – 61.58 miles
My training this past week didn’t go as planned, as I intended to run on Saturday. Life happens, and sometimes an extra break will be better in the long run. Clearly, getting back into a normal routine isn’t going to be the easiest thing to tackle this week, but of course there’s no choice but to do so. I’m going to be challenged this week, but I’m prepared for that challenge and to see what I’m able to accomplish in the coming week.
QOTD: How do you approach getting back into your normal routine after coming home from vacation?
Sounds like you had a great weekend! Sometimes you just need that break. It is hard to get back into the swing of things after having time off. I just finally get my butt out the door and do it:) And know that I always feel better afterwards! ~L
That’s exactly what I did last night. I didn’t want to get off the couch, but I did, and after my 2 mile run I felt so much better!
Aww. love the photos from the wedding. You and Preston look fantastic and I love your dress! Getting back into training is not always easy, but writing down your workouts in advance for a week might be helpful. Each day it will get easier. Good luck with the house!
Thanks Pam!
What a great weekend! I must have missed a post some where, I didn’t know you guys found a house. I hope the home inspection went well!
The home insprection was last Tuesday. Hopefully nothing major comes up and delays our closing at the beginning of July!
I FORGIVE myself when I’m tired and having a hard time at first that’s for sure – way to go girlie!
Thanks Kat, I’m definitely trying to not be too hard on myself.
I ran this race last year – my first half marathon ever. Was a fairly easy course, just very humid! Training is key, but since I flubbed my training and still has a successful race, I think only getting two days in won’t hurt you in the end run. Good luck!
Thanks Sam! I ran the 5k last year, and remember the humidity very well.
What a fun weekend! And your dress is gorgeous! An extra rest day is ok…it may end up being better for you in the long run! You’ll be more rested this week to get back after it!
Thanks Mindy! I was definitely exhausted after work yesterday, so hopefully it’ll get better throughout the week.
What a gorgeous place to run! I absolutely love your dress too and the bride looks beautiful!
I don’t get to go on vacation often (Really only once in the past couple years because of the baby), but I didn’t stop my usual routine while I was away. I think that definitely helped me stay motivated!
I tried not to let my running routine slide, but it was just too difficult Saturday to get up and go for a run after such a fun time at the wedding on Friday.
Congrats to your SIL. I love your dress Kathryn! Sounds like you had a nice weekend. I am slowly coming back from my unexpected “rest days” (I think I am almost back to normal – running wise I am in good shape… strength is another story). I am sure you will get back into the swing of things in no time 🙂
I hear ya on the lack of strength…a week off and I’m sure I’ll feel it the first time I step back into the gym for strength training!
