After completing my first half marathon, Preston wanted to ensure that my first half was properly celebrated and not overshadowed by his pending completion of the Dopey Challenge the next day. We had initially planned to celebrate with Mom and Dad at Epcot and with dinner at Le Cellier, but shortly after we got back to our hotel after the race Mom and Dad made a last minute decision to not purchase park tickets, thus, our dinner plan had to be changed.
We lucked out, as Preston was able to score a last minute reservation to California Grill at the Contemporary Resort. We’ve always wanted to eat there, and when we tried to make a reservation for this trip when we made our other dining reservations, the only times available at California Grill were for late seatings, which wasn’t ideal given the early morning wake up calls we had for the races. We were very excited to get a 5:15pm reservation time only hours before dinner!
While my parents spent time at the pool Preston and I spent the afternoon at Epcot. We spent the majority of our time in World Showcase so that we could walk around and keep our legs loose. Although my legs did tighten up throughout the day, I can only imagine how much worse they would have been had we not kept moving.
My first priority when we got to Epcot was to visit with Donald in Mexico. I just had to show off my medal to him and share my accomplishment! He appeared to be very proud of me when I told him that it had been my first marathon.
After lunch at La Cantina de San Angel (we were still hungry despite having had brunch in the Race Retreat tent), we slowly made our way around World Showcase. We kept the afternoon pretty low key, and definitely appreciated the gorgeous weather we had that afternoon. I moved pretty slowly due to my sore legs and chaffed thigh, but we eventually made one full loop around World Showcase, rode Soarin’, and then headed back to our hotel to change for dinner.
We couldn’t have picked a better evening to enjoy dinner at California Grill! The weather was gorgeous, which allowed us to enjoy the view of the beautiful sun as it set over the Seven Seas Lagoon.
All four of us absolutely enjoyed our meals at California Grill. The food was spectacular, our server was incredible, and when she heard that we were celebrating my first half marathon she ensured that we received a complimentary dessert to celebrate the occasion.
Our fourth full day at Disney World was absolutely amazing. From running my first half marathon to celebrating my milestone race with Preston, Mom, and Dad, I couldn’t have planned the day better. Although I was initially disappointed that we wouldn’t be able to eat at Le Cellier, which is one of my and Preston’s favorite restaurants at Disney World, I’m so glad that we topped off what was already an incredible day by trying a new restaurant and enjoying it as much as we did. Preston and I both found a new favorite Disney restaurant that day, but won’t be visiting California Grill on every future trip to Disney World, as we want to only go there for special occasions.
QOTD: How do you celebrate major milestones and accomplishments?
