Walt Disney World Half Marathon Training Log – Week 18

What a week!  My last full week of half marathon training was full of lots of excitement, mainly with events going on outside of my training.  Good thing I’m currently tapering otherwise I’m not sure I would have had enough time to get decent runs in this past week!

Since I didn’t have time last weekend I started the week off with my second to last long run, which was also my last run of 2013.  Not only did I end the month with my highest monthly mileage thus far, but I also rounded out 2013 and ran just over 417 miles this past year (and when added together with walking and the elliptical I completed over 581 training miles), which is incredible given that I only started running in mid-March.

I ran over 67 miles in the month of December, which is my highest monthly mileage to date!

Mid week we rang in 2014 with some friends at a gathering in Manassas.  We had lots of great food that night (it was a Mexican themed pot luck) while in the company of good friends.

Then Thursday afternoon I got a phone call that most people dread – an automated call saying that my flight to Illinois for Friday morning had been canceled.  Great.  I was headed to Illinois as a surprise for my Mom’s birthday, and was only supposed to be there for two nights.  Fortunately, I was rebooked, but out of Baltimore instead of DC, and with snow falling I drove up towards Baltimore Thursday evening.  I lucked out and spent a good part of the drive behind four snow plows, so although the drive was slow I made it there safely.  After getting up early Friday morning and driving through the snow some more, I arrived at the airport just as they made the decision to delay my flight.  The delays continued, but fortunately I made it to the party with five minutes to spare after getting in nearly seven hours late.  And I’m so glad that I made it in time – the look of surprise on my Mom’s face was priceless.

And just when you thought my travels couldn’t become any more interesting, I found out that central Illinois had been placed under a Winter Storm Warning.  Less than three hours after arriving I was back on the phone with the airline, and was fortunately rebooked to leave the next morning.  So after spending less than 16 hours with my parents, I was on my way back home.  It was a whirlwind trip to Illinois, but I’m so glad that I could be there for my Mom’s surprise birthday party.

Clearly, all the travel put a huge damper on my last weekend of training, but I still got my last “long” run in.  Its hard to believe that at this time next week I’ll have completed my first half marathon and that I’ll be celebrating achieving the goal that I’ve had my eyes set on since March!
